- Moving beyond our fears- Meditation of the week
- Straight to the core
All of us have fears. Fear of heights, fear of failure, fear of loss, fear of falling. Fears area part of our human existence.
Fears can prevent us from developing our yoga practice and experiencing the fullness of life. Fears can be based in our current reality or be the lingering residue of traumatic events to which we become attached in our minds and spirit. Fears can paralyze us and prevent us from taking action or being present and finding strength in our current reality .
The Christian scriptures teach that God did not design us to be limited by our fears. 2 Timothy 1:7
English: Contemporary English Version (1999) - CEV
7 God's Spirit b God's Spirit: Or “God.” doesn't make cowards out of us. The Spirit gives us power, love, and self-control.

Through the body, mind, spirit connection in yoga we can learn to move beyond our fears into an active stillness of the heart and mind. We can come to that connection through prayerful meditation. In our meditation we don’t seek just confidence (which speaks to our current capacity) but also courage (which speaks to our potential) to more beyond fear; to act in spite of our fears and doubts.
Meditation: Find a quiet comfortable place to practice your meditation. Read the scripture above. Lie on your back close your eyes and begin to breath deeply. Breathe into the fullness of your inhalation and breathe out all the way to the end of your exhalation emptying the lungs. Do this breathing pattern several times. Then work through this process adapted from the examen of Ignatius of Loyola.
Breathe in – Recall that you are in the Presence of God.
Breathe out - Look at your life with Gratitude.
Breathe in Ask for help from God’s Spirit
Each time a current or past fear comes mind inhale and move though the process releasing the fear with the breath out. Close by reading the following.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
