Yoga mat care

103_0274Recently we had the mats for healthy habits and our Wholly Yoga mats cleaned. I also cleaned my personal mats. Mats accumulate dirt, sweat, and yes even germs from regular use. So they do need to be cleaned. I came across some blog posts and an article on cleaning you mat that I thought I’d share.

First if your mat is heavily soiled consider putting it in the washing machine if it is made from a washable material. Most yoga mats you buy in the store are. Wash on the gentle or normal cycle in cold water with a little mild soap and air dry. That worked for my yoga fit mat which I keep at home and is heavily used for my home practice. Now it is nice and clean and smelling fresh again.

If your mat is not heavily soiled and has been cleaned regularly, you can purchase mat spray cleaner or wipes or make your own natural cleaner using this recipe from craftbits:

Ingredients

Filtered water
1/4 cup of Vinegar
3 tbs Alcohol
Eucalyptus essential oil
1 tsp Tea Tree Oil

Fill up your spray bottle with the vinegar and Alcohol. Then add 1 tsp of Tea Tree Oil. Add 12 drops of Eucalyptus oil. Fill the bottle with water. Alternatively try a subtle mint essential oil or lavender. Take the spray and lightly spray the yoga mat and air dry it before rolling up.

If your mat is somewhere in between you could also rub/scrub the mat lightly with some a mild soap and cold water solution laid in a tub or on a large beach towel. Air dry as above.
