In his book The Heart of Yoga T.K.V. Desikachar has a chapter entitled” The Things that Darken the Heart.” In the writes chapter T.K.V. writes about those things that are present to us human being that are barriers to connecting to God and ultimately lead to suffering (duhka). Those things are ego (asmtita) , fear (abhinivesa), desire -undue attachment(raga) and irrational rejection -being closed minded (dvesa).

Things that darken our hearts are cold and unfocused and lack generosity. Embracing the light that God has placed in us and letting our light shine, allows us to be generous and focused bringing warmth into our lives and the lives of others. Practicing yoga can help us to find our way to the light of God that dispels those dark things.

On the mat let your light shine by letting go of ego and fear but let your heart radiate in our practice through the breath. Off the mat let your light shine by being generous in your relationships and contacts, radiating your love light which comes from God into the lives of those around you.

..let your light shine. Matthew 5:16b (NIV)

That will be our intention for our practices this week. Jesus said you are the light of the world.
